Accurate
up to date statistical information is difficult to obtain.
It is estimated
that there are 6000 new cases in Australia annually admitted to hospital
with traumatic brain injury (including stroke).
Many require hospitalisation, but do not have significant residual impairment.
However the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare data indicates
that approximately 15% need rehabilitation and ongoing care.
For more statistical information about the incidence and prevalence
of acquired brain injury refer to Hillier, Sharp and Metzer 1997. Epidemiology
of traumatic brain injury in South Australia. Brain Injury 11 : 649-59.
Fortune N and Wen X 1999. The Definition, incidence and prevalence
of Acquired Brain Injury in Australia, Australian Institute of Health
and Welfare Canberra.
Estimates
of incidence range from 100 - 377 per 100,000 population p.a.
In 1993,
110200 people reported that assistance or supervision was required for
personal care and activities of daily living (due to ABI).
